The Laramie Project

& The Laramie Project : Ten Years Later

In 1998, a 21 year old gay student was kidnapped, severely beaten and left to die, tied to a fence on the outskirts of Laramie, Wyoming. His name was Matthew Shepard. A New York theatre company travelled to Laramie to chronicle the life of the town in the year after the murder, and subsequently ten years after that, in the aftermath of the resulting play becoming a world-wide sensation and Matthew's name becoming synonymous with hate crime.

The Laramie Project and The Laramie Project: Ten Years Later are a breathtaking collage that explores the depth to which humanity can sink and the compassionate heights to which we can climb. A powerful stage experience that will touch and change those who witness these theatrical masterpieces.

Director: Chris Baldock
Assistant Director: Alexandra Pelvin

and featuring Chris Baldock, Andrea Close, Michael Cooper, Joel Horwood, Liz St Clair Long, Hayden Splitt, Meaghan Stewart and Karen Vickery

Canberra Reviews:

"Mockingbird's The Laramie Project and The Laramie Project: Ten Years Later are excellent...The first play has shown that it can stand alone. The second supports and expands it...The work of this cast, crew and director is excellent. This town ought to be able to find audiences prepared to set aside two nights for the full experience. People can do it for Harry Potter." - The Canberra Times

“..”The Laramie Project” achieves great things through its stellar cast, surgically precise direction and beautifully minimalist set....a better night at Theatre 3 you will not find....a master class in contemporary theatre...Looking over the two evenings, it is really quite awe-inspiring that the ensemble has prepared themselves so well for two massive plays....All in all, it is a necessary sequel to the Matthew Shepard tale....Highly engaging, immensely worthwhile.” - CityNews - The Laramie Project & The Laramie Project: Ten Years Later

“The opportunity to see these powerful performers working together in this memorable production is not to be missed.” - Canberra Critics Circle

"" outstanding production...superbly staged...brilliant...a magnificent piece of storytelling...sensational...utterly unmissable production" - The Laramie Project - Peter Wilkins, Canberra Critics Circle

"Mockingbird’ Theatre’s production of The Laramie Project and The Laramie Project: Ten Years Later, under the direction of Chris Baldock and featuring a superb cast and production team assumes the status of a state theatre company production, worthy of appearing on any professional stage in the country. Sadly, Canberra does not have a state theatre company, and it is time again to support and to invest in the excellent work of a local company such as Mockingbird Theatre." - The Laramie Project: Ten Years Later - Peter Wilkins, Canberra Critics Circle

"...It was a feat of endurance that was fascinating to watch, and says much for the talent and dedication of the actors, as well as the skillful direction of Baldock...Both plays have much to say about the human condition, and to have the opportunity to experience them consecutively, particularly as interpreted by this fine ensemble, was a theatrical experience to be cherished.  Mockingbird Theatre is to be commended for its audacity and courage in so successfully mounting these two important plays." - Australian Arts Review
